A recap and review of the season two finale for hit series Haven.

Haven’s season two finale, “Sins of the Fathers”, aired on British television on 13th December 2011 on SyFy. The ghosts of Haven come back to deal with unfinished business and Duke must decide which side he is on.

Recap of “Sins of the Fathers”

A man, Arlo, wakes his friend and urges him to go and save his wife, Shelia. The man in bed is confused; Arlo is dead so how can he be there. Nevertheless he rushes to save Arlo’s wife. He gets to the house and sees someone attacking her but unbeknown to him it is Arlo who has lured her downstairs. As he fires his gun the bullet goes through the ghost killing Shelia instead. Arlo leaves telling him it was payback for him having an affair with his wife.

Next morning Dukes tells Audrey he won’t kill her just because his father told him to. She promises him they will figure this all out and goes into the newspaper to speak to the Teagues brothers.

Audrey has a photograph of one of her past versions with Dave and demands answers. She is furious they have kept information about her past incarnations from her. Vince tells her before she was Audrey she was Lucy and before that she was Sarah. However he doesn’t have any information before Sarah. They tell her that they don’t know where she goes in between the Troubles or how she has new memories each time. Vince tells her that all they know is that every time she returns to Haven she helps the Troubled.

Vince gives Audrey a ring which belonged to Sarah but then she gets a call from Nathan. As Audrey leaves Dave tells Vince he has told her too much but Vince says she needs his help and Dave won’t get in the way this time.

On his boat Duke is surprised to see his dead father, Simon.

Nathan meets Audrey at the scene of Shelia’s murder and tells her that Shelia’s killer admits to doing it but is also blaming her dead husband. Nathan says that neighbours who heard the shots also saw Arlo leave the house and they start to investigate whether he faked his death.

Nathan asks Audrey to dinner and she accepts. They agree to tomorrow night and Audrey says she’ll make him pancakes. Nathan, flustered, asks if she’s talking about dinner or breakfast but Audrey just smiles and walks off.

Duke refuses to believe that Simon is a ghost and talks about how he was a terrible father. Simon agrees with him then notices that Duke has his weapons and journal and asks if the Troubles are back. Simon tells Duke that the reason he was never around was because he was out saving people. He says that if a Crocker kills a Troubled person then it removes the ‘curse’ from that family. Duke is unimpressed that his family’s Trouble is to remove Troubles from families by killing someone.

Nathan and Audrey want to have Arlo exhumed and speak to the grave digger, Kyle Hopkins. Kyle is hostile towards them and reveals he was one of the Rev’s followers. Kyle digs up Arlo’s body revealing that he is still dead. Nathan gets a call about another murder where a dead girl told her brother to kill someone.

At the station Audrey and Nathan speak to the brother who tells them that his sister, Annie, had killed herself after she was raped. Dave and Vince arrive and reveal that Arlo died of a heart attack after finding out his wife had an affair. Audrey thinks that dead are coming back for revenge and using the living to do it.

At the cemetery Kyle is reburying Arlo when the Rev appears and asks Kyle to help him finish his work in Haven.

Simon has taken Duke to a field and tells him that a group of children died there because of a Troubled person. One of the children had been so frightened by a campfire story that her affliction started and killed everyone. Simon reveals that he had the chance to kill the girl’s grandfather the week before the children’s trip but that he had been unable to. The day after the deaths the grandfather begged Simon to kill him. Simon tells Duke he has a responsibility but Duke tells him to go to hell and walks away.

Audrey and Nathan learn that both Arlo and Annie were buried at Eastside Cemetery. Meanwhile Driscoll has given Kyle a list of Troubled people in Haven and instructs him to mark their houses.

At the cemetery Nathan warns Audrey about Duke and tells her about when Duke came back to Haven. He tricked Nathan into going fishing with him to cover up his smuggling. They got into a fight and that was when Nathan realised his Trouble had come back. He tells Audrey she can never trust Duke.

They go to Annie’s grave and as they look around the cemetery Nathan sees over twenty dead people surrounding them. He asks if Audrey can see them but she cannot. The ghosts form a circle around them and then leave.

Audrey spots Duke burying something in the cemetery. He tells them it was the weapons box and about his Trouble and what his father told him. Nathan asks where Simon was buried and Duke says he was moved to Eastside a year ago.

Duke asks Audrey if it bothers her that she never really solves anything. She is meant to help the Troubled but the Troubles keep coming back. She says she has no alternative but Duke asks what she would do if she did.

Nathan has found that the same person moved Simon and buried Arlo and Annie; Kyle. Suddenly Nathan and Duke see Chief Wuornos in the cemetery and Nathan is confused; his father was not buried there. Audrey and Duke leave to find Kyle while Nathan goes to speak to his father.

Nathan and the Chief talk about the death of the Rev, Audrey and Troubles. The Chief tells Nathan that the situation in Haven is precarious and that Nathan can’t be in love with Audrey; that she is too important to the town. He tells Nathan that he has to keep Audrey alive.

Audrey and Duke find a red X in the street outside a house and realise that the people who lived there were attacked. Duke sees the Rev on the porch of the house but does not tell Audrey. As she goes to check the house Duke talks to the Rev who says he has come back for Duke. The Rev asks Duke to come with him and Duke initially refuses until Driscoll threatens to hurt Audrey.

Nathan picks up Audrey and they go Kyle’s house together. They meet Kyle’s pregnant wife and Audrey notices she has red paint on her hand. Instead of identifying themselves as police Audrey pretends they are lost.

They follow her to a shed in the woods where the Rev’s followers have taken many of Haven’s Troubled residents. Nathan fears they plan to burn down the shed, killing the people inside. The Rev arrives with Duke, distracting Audrey and Nathan long enough for Driscoll’s followers to catch them.

The Rev wants Duke to kill the Troubled in the shed as it will save their families from suffering with Troubles. One of the Rev’s followers puts a knife in Duke’s hand but Duke refuses just as Audrey and Nathan are brought over. Nathan asks Duke if he is working with the Rev and Duke says he isn’t, throwing down the knife.

Audrey tries to get through to Kyle by telling him he is Troubled but Kyle doesn’t believe her and turns to the Rev for help. Driscoll says he can’t but tells Kyle that Duke can spare Kyle’s child from having the Troubles.

The knife is put back into Duke’s hand as Kyle asks Duke to kill him. Audrey tries to get through to Duke by saying that they can stop this. Simon and the Rev tell Duke not to listen to her and that she is a liar.

Duke doesn’t believe them but Simon tells him that when Audrey was Sarah she killed his grandfather and as Lucy she killed Simon. Simon says that she will kill Duke but Duke says that she is his friend. Suddenly Kyle pulls Duke’s hand forward and the knife goes into his stomach. Kyle’s blood is absorbed by Duke and as Kyle dies the dead vanish.

In Haven Vince informs Dave that he was the one that paid for Chief Wuornos to be dug up by Kyle because he was needed. Dave disapproves with Vince’s actions and Vince tries to convince his brother that things will be different this time.

Audrey is cooking dinner for her date with Nathan when someone knocks on the door. As she answers it she is tasered. Nathan arrives and finds that Audrey is missing and Duke’s whistle is on the floor. Assuming that Duke is to blame Nathan goes to his boat to confront him and the two of them fight.

Duke reaches for a hidden gun only to find Nathan stood over him with his own gun pointed at Duke. Duke sees a tattoo on Nathan’s forearm; the same tattoo the man who will kill Duke has. The episode ends with an outside shot of Duke’s boat and a gunshot is heard coming from inside.

Review of “Sins of the Fathers”

“Sins of the Fathers” is a classic cliff-hanger season ending with fans left wondering what has happened to Audrey and if Duke and Nathan have killed each other.

The pacing is quite fast as there is a lot of information to cram into one episode and some areas are brushed aside rather quickly. It would be easy to say that this would have worked better as a two part episode however that really would be being really picky.

“Sins of the Fathers” works and any more time given to the episodic plot would have been padding. This episode focuses firmly on the overall season plot and the fast pace adds to the feeling of urgency.

This episode was an excellent end to season two which has left Haven fans looking forward to season three.
