American series Haven continued its successful run of season two on British television with episode ten, “Who, What, Where, Wendigo?”, airing on SyFy on 6th December 2011. Nathan and Audrey search in the woods for a missing boy who may have been taken by a serial killer.
Recap of “Who, What, Where, Wendigo?”
A trucker stops for some rest outside a café and listens to the radio. The announcer is giving information about a body that has been found, the latest in a series of murders. As the radio gives a description of the murder suspect, a young body runs out of the café closely followed by a man matching the description of the murderer. The trucker pulls a gun out and follows the two of them to a shed behind the café. Strange animal sounds can be heard coming from inside and as he approaches the trucker is seemingly attacked and thrown to the ground.
Audrey and Nathan talk to the trucker about the possible serial killer. Dwight arrives and insinuates that the trucker was attacked by a bear. Audrey leaves Dwight to ‘clean’ the trucker and speaks to Nathan. The missing boy is Rory Campbell and as they talk they spot a blood trail.
They follow the trail to the edge of some woods where Audrey finds a wrist strap with the word “Forever” on. Nathan wants to gather a large search party but Audrey talks him out of it stating that she isn’t sure who they can trust in Haven.
Rory’s father, identifies the wrist strap as Rory’s and because he knows about the Troubles he insists on joining the search for his son. Dwight also wants to join them and at first Nathan refuses but Dwight persists. Audrey calls Duke to ask for his help but he tells her he has other plans. Nathan has called Vince and Dave Teagues who know the woods well and the search party split into pairs.
Dwight and Vince talk about Dwight’s affliction and someone named Lizzie. As they talk they hear a screeching sound from further in the woods.
Audrey and Mr Campbell also hear the screeching and find pools of blood on the trail. They follow the blood, finding first a dead racoon and then the serial killer. He has been impaled on a tree branch and his chest has been ripped open.
The group examine the body and discuss who could have killed him. Dave thinks it could be a Wendigo; a human spirit which tracks and eats people. Dwight seems to confirm this theory when he informs the group that the teeth marks on the body are human.
The group hear the screeching again and split into their pairs to continue the search. Nathan and Dave come across Duke, Driscoll and a group of men. All of the men are armed and at first there is a stand off until Audrey arrives.
The Rev claims to be searching for Rory and refuses to leave the woods. Nathan refuses to accept their help but Campbell agrees with the Rev that more people are needed in order to find Rory.
Audrey and Nathan are worried about Duke and think that losing Evi has caused Duke to act without thinking things through. Meanwhile Dwight appears to see a girl in a pink tutu before hearing the screeching again.
Audrey and Nathan find a girl’s cardigan which is covered in blood. As the screeching noise seems to get closer Rory suddenly rushes out of the woods. He tells his father about killing the murderer but stops when one of Driscoll’s men appears. The man has been bitten by something and Rory runs off again. Audrey notes that Rory isn’t afraid of whatever is in the woods and Nathan agrees, concluding that the creature must be after them.
As it starts to get dark the search party all make camp together. That night Duke tells Audrey that he is playing the Rev in order to get information.
The screeching starts again and is approaching the camp. Campbell and Driscoll’s men want to go to find the creature and Nathan follows to keep Duke safe. As he tries to catch up Nathan trips over a dead deer and finds two young girls; Frankie and Sophie Benton.
Audrey is looking for Nathan but finds the Rev instead. He tells her that he intends to wipe out the Troubled. Nathan, who had been hiding nearby, grabs Audrey and takes her to meet the two sisters.
Frankie tells Audrey that they are Wendigos and that they can survive on any living flesh but that human flesh is what they crave. They have been living off deer and other animals because Frankie would never allow them to hunt people. Nathan explains that they are Troubled and that their parents were killed a few months ago which triggered their change.
Audrey wants to know who killed the murderer if the sisters don’t eat people. Frankie thinks it could be their other sister, Amelia, who ran off a week ago. Audrey shows them the wrist strap she found and Frankie says it is Amelia’s.
Audrey believes that Rory is Amelia’s boyfriend and that he lured the killer into the woods for her to eat. As Driscoll’s search party gets closer Nathan tells Frankie to take Sophie somewhere safe while he and Audrey look for Amelia.
The next morning at an old cabin Amelia tells Rory her hunger is getting worse. He attempts to comfort her but she is too hungry and pushes him away. Rory leaves Amelia at the cabin and goes to get her some more food.
The search party has split into two groups with Audrey and Nathan joined by the Teagues brother and Dwight heading towards the cabin. Duke has stayed with Driscoll and his men and ask they walk Driscoll tells Duke he will give him some answers once this is over. He tells Duke that he will be able to help Duke to succeed where his father failed in saving Haven.
As Duke walks off Rory hits the Rev over the head with a rock, knocking him unconsciousness, and then drags him off.
Nathan and Audrey fail to find Amelia and Duke arrives to tell them the Rev is missing. Campbell, Duke and Driscoll’s men go off to find the Rev but Audrey tells her group to hold back. She wants to go find Frankie and get her help in finding her sister.
Audrey, Nathan and Dwight go to get Frankie while Dave and Vince stay at the cabin in case Rory and Amelia return. When they find the sisters Sophie is becoming ill from the hunger. Dwight takes her to his truck where he has a medical kit. Frankie goes with Audrey and Nathan to find Amelia.
Rory has taken Amelia to the Rev who he has tied to a tree. Rory tells Amelia it is the only way and that the Rev was planning to kill her.
As Dwight carried Sophie to his truck he talks to her about ballet. He tells her about his daughter, Lizzie, but is distracted and gets his foot caught in a bear trap.
Audrey, Nathan and Frankie hear Rory shouting for help as do the other search party. Campbell, Duke and the other men head towards the sound of Rory’s screams. However Frankie tells Audrey that although Rory is running one way the smell of blood is coming from the opposite direction.
Dwight can’t get his foot free and offers himself for Sophie to eat. However she tells him that he will save her and refuses to feed off him. Dwight eventually pulls the trap out of the ground and is able to get Sophie to safety.
Amelia hasn’t eaten the Rev, although the smell of his blood is overwhelming her. Although she is hungry Amelia resists and cuts the Rev free. As soon as he is free Driscoll attacks Amelia, taking her knife from her with the intent to kill the young girl.
Frankie and Nathan arrive and as Frankie rushes to save her sister a shot rings out. Audrey has shot the Rev in order to save Amelia, and he collapses to the ground; Reverend Driscoll is dead.
The others arrive and want to know what happened. Nathan defends Audrey’s actions and says it was a proper kill as Audrey was defending Amelia.
Dwight gets into his truck, momentarily looking at photos of his daughter Lizzie before taking the sisters somewhere safe. Nathan asks Dave and Vince where they will be taken and they tell him a slaughterhouse. The sisters will be able to feed and stay safe until the Troubles are over.
Duke is angry with Audrey for shooting the Rev because he will not get his answers now. She asks him what he would have done in her position and he admits he doesn’t know.
Review of “Who, What, Where, Wendigo?”
“Who, What, Where, Wendigo?” ramps up the tension in Haven with the death of the Rev and viewers will no doubt be wondering how his followers will react. Audrey talks of a war and if Driscoll’s followers also believe this when the final few episodes of season two will be very interesting.
Dwight is given more depth with the introduction of this daughter Lizzie who died. One can only hope that Dwight will be seen more in this series.
Duke’s role to save Haven is unclear and has a rushed feeling about it. Seeds could have been planned earlier and as it is the plot twist feels tacked on.
